Beschreibung

Politically sensitive language is a hot topic of debate, which often produces polarizing either/or positions. But what does it mean to consider the way discrimination works in and through language in depth and nuance? How can interdisciplinary and intersectional approaches allow us to understand these problems better, and work towards practicable solutions?
In this transdisciplinary seminar, a collaboration between the Institutes of Cognitive Science, and English and American Studies, students will be introduced to the platform and digital tool machtsprache.de, and work in interdisciplinary teams to develop their own projects that engage with these questions. We will look at the intersections of political language and discourse, translation, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and translation tools
During the first days of the block seminar we will take the time to illustrate the topic from the perspectives of the different disciplines. What are open questions? What do we want to pay attention to? What do the different approaches of cultural studies and computer science reveal when brought together? By finding similarities and differences in our approaches, we will come to a shared understanding.
Given this foundation, teams comprised equally of English and American Studies and Cognitive Science students will work collaboratively to conceptualize an application within the thematic frame of the seminar. You are free to select a topic or get inspired by examples the lecturers provide. Together, you will build a prototype for your application. At the end of the block seminar, you share your ideas, reasoning, and solutions with the course participants.
